How to Practice Self-Care During the Holidays

Relax More, Worry less.
Self-care is important year-round, but it is especially key during the holiday season. With presents to buy and parties to attend, it can feel like there is no time to just relax. Before you know it, stress from the holidays can keep you from enjoying the most wonderful time of the year. Follow the tips below so you can avoid the typical stress that comes with the holiday season.

Create a Checklist

It’s no understatement that the to-do list can seem never-ending during the months of November and December. By prioritizing what you need-and want-to-do, you can ensure everything gets done. Don’t forget to include things that you enjoy!

Adjust Your Expectations

It can be easy to set unrealistic expectations for yourself. It’s OK if everything doesn’t get done. Remind yourself what’s important and what you would like to happen. Consider everything else that gets done a bonus!

Set Aside Time for Yourself

Amid all the chaos of the holidays, it’s important that you set time aside for yourself. Whether you get some holiday shopping out of the way, hit up the spa or simply go for a walk, taking time for yourself is a great way to unwind during a stressful time of the year.

Don’t Abandon Your Normal Routine

While many people take advantage of the holidays to abandon their diet and exercise routine, you will actually be able to fight stress better if you take care of yourself. Make exercise a priority, aim for eight hours of sleep each night and try to eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. By doing so, you will allow yourself to be your best this season.

Learn to Say No

By saying yes to everything, you are only setting yourself up for a more stressful season. Aim to simplify your holidays as much as possible. Begin saying no to social events that you don’t really want to attend, ask your friends and family members to help out with tasks like cooking side dishes for holiday meals, and avoid the stress of the mall by shopping online.

Avoid Getting Sick

This may seem out of your control, but by taking care of yourself, you can help keep your body from falling victim to a cold or even the flu. Stress tends to weaken the immune system, so
following the tips above will help keep you healthy so you can enjoy the season with your friends and family. To avoid getting sick, it is also smart to get plenty of vitamin C, get plenty of ZZZs each night and stay away from others who may be ill.
